All Write Summer Institute 2015

“Start with the WHY!”

In education today, emphasis lies heavily on standards. Because of this, it is easy to become so wrapped up in the “what” to teach and “how” to teach, we forget the “Why”. This year’s theme focuses on the importance of starting with the “why.” When the purpose, cause, or belief is clear, great things can happen!

Seymour Simon- whom the NY Times called "the dean of [children’s science] writers," is the author of more than 250 highly acclaimed science books (many of which have been named Outstanding Science Trade Books for Children by the National Science Teachers Association). His website, www.SeymourSimon.com, is a unique online destination designed to engage children in reading, writing, and interacting with Seymour and his books, as well as to provide families and educators with a rich array of resources designed to enhance their children’s reading experience.

Greg Tang—believes that all kids are capable of doing well in math, and he has a mission to make math a natural part of every child's life. He has successfully taught his method to children from ages five to ten. Grapes of Math and Math for All Seasons are part of a series of books that will help children gain the range of skills needed for higher math. Jennifer Serravallo—A  literacy consultant, researcher, and author, Jennifer Serravallo is the best-selling author or coauthor of the Heinemann titles Teaching Reading in Small Groups and Conferring with Readers. Kylene Beers and Bob Probst—Writers, speakers, and educators, Kylene Beers and Robert (Bob) Probst have worked together for over a decade helping teachers improve the literacy lives of students. Kylene is the author of When Kids Can't Read/What Teachers Can Do and Bob is the author of Response and Analysis. Together they are coauthors of Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading and coeditors, with Linda Rief, of Adolescent Literacy: Turning Promise into Practice.

Chris Lehman—Chris has been a middle school teacher; a high-school teacher; a literacy coach. He is an international speaker, education consultant, and New York Times best-selling author. His books include: Pathways to the Common Core with Lucy Calkins and Mary Ehrenworth; Falling In Love with Close Reading with Kate Roberts; Energize Research Reading and Writing; and A Quick Guide to Reviving Disengaged Writers. His articles and interviews have appeared in many publications and popular blogs including Voices in the Middle; SmartBrief; EdWeek; Choice Literacy; and Talks with Teachers.

Kate Roberts--Growing up, Kate Roberts swore to never become a writer or a teacher. She became both and is very grateful that fate did not listen. Kate is coauthor (with Christopher Lehman) of Falling in Love with Close Reading. It is informed by her experiences as a middle school language arts teacher in Brooklyn, as a literacy coach, and, currently, as a staff developer with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. Her work with students across the country has led her to believe that all kids can be insightful, academic thinkers when the work is demystified, broken down, and made engaging. Ruth Ayres— a writing coach for the Wawasee School District in northern Indiana, spends her days helping students find meaning in their stories and encouraging teachers to reflect on and refine the art of teaching writing.  Ruth began her career teaching seventh-grade language arts and has been influenced by the professional development offered by the All-Write Consortium.  Ruth is the co-author of Day by Day and Celebrating Writers (Stenhouse Publisher).  Ruth lives in Indiana with her husband, Andy, and their four children. www.ruthayreswrites.com

Georgia Heard—As a writer, a poet, and a founding member of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, Georgia Heard continues to bring a poet’s ear and a teacher’s know-how to every aspect of writing instruction. Her latest books, The Revision Toolbox, Second Edition and Finding the Heart of Nonfiction, take their place alongside essential resources such as the Heinemann titles Writing Toward Home; and Awakening the Heart—which Instructor Magazine called one of its 12 Books Every Teacher Should Read.

Betsy Fulwiler—Betsy is a veteran science curriculum consultant and developer of the nationally known Expository Writing and Science Notebooks Program in Seattle Public Schools.  A former classroom teacher, reading specialist, and editor, she specializes in creating ways to teach students how to think and write scientifically. She is author of Writing in Science How to Scaffold Instruction to Support Learning and Writing in Science in Action Strategies, Tools, and Classroom Video.

Dan Feigelson--Dan Feigelson has worked extensively in New York City schools as a teacher, staff developer, curriculum writer, principal, and local superintendent. An early member of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, he has led institutes, workshops and lab-sites around the world on the teaching of reading and writing. A regular presenter at national conferences, Dan is the author of Reading Projects Reimagined: Student-Driven Conferences to Deepen Critical Thinking, and Practical Punctuation: Lessons in Rule Making and Rule Breaking in Elementary Writing. Dan will be presenting special sessions for Administrators and leadership.
